Fundació Uriach 1838 was created in 1988 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the commencing of business activities by the Uriach company.
At the present time, Grupo Uriach continues an uninterrupted family tradition spanning five generations, and is one of the foremost pharmaceutical and fine chemical companies in Spain.
Three elements (History, Medicine and Pharmacy) are the main components of the driving force behind the creation of Fundació Uriach, as set forth by its Board of Trustees in the objectives of its foundational statutes:
To promote, encourage and diffuse Spanish scientific research within the Healthcare sciences sector (Medicine, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Veterinary fields), and collaborate to research on the subjects or aspects that cannot be covered with public funds through the provision of economic support.
All the above is instrumented through three basic initiative groups:
- Through organising, promoting, contributing and awarding prizes to all teaching or research activities related to Healthcare Sciences. The most important of these awards is the Fundació Uriach Prize for Healthcare Sciences.
- Through promoting research in the medical pharmaceutical, chemical and healthcare fields in general, by means of awarding grants, scholarships and aid.
- Through promoting study and publishing scientific works on the history of Healthcare Sciences via the Fundació Uriach Documentary Centre and the Fundació Uriach publications collection.
